Hawai'i's Robinson honored by WAC

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i's Kate Robinson was named the Western Athletic Conference's Pitcher of the Week after two softball victories over No. 25 Fresno State this past weekend.

Robinson previously earned two WAC Hitter of the Week honors, but this was her first pitcher honor this season.

Robinson pitched 12 innings in two complete game efforts, holding Fresno State to three runs on nine hits with three walks, with 12 strikeouts. She also went 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs as UH won, 18-2, in the first game of the series, shortened to five-innings by the league's 10-run differential rule. Robinson held off Fresno State, 2-1, in the third game of the series.

Robinson, a junior, is a Kamehameha Schools alum.

Ashley Frisby of New Mexico State was the WAC Hitter of the Week.

Hawai'i (42-9) closes its regular season this weekend with a series at Utah State.

WOMEN'S GOLF

HAWAI'I LEADS WAC

Four Rainbow Wahine golfers are in the top six and the University of Hawai'i leads the team standings after yesterday's first round of the Western Athletic Conference women's golf tournament at Las Cruces, N.M.

Hawai'i's huge start — the team's worst score was 76 — came with a brutal beginning: The team was 11-over par after the first hole at the New Mexico State University Golf Course.

Junior Xyra Suyetsugu finished with a 2-over-par 74 to tie for fourth, four shots out of first.

UH freshman Corie Hou is tied with teammates Dale Gammie and Nancy Shon for sixth at 75.

Junior Lisa Kajihara is tied for 12th, another shot back.

The Rainbow Wahine, ranked 40th nationally, lead the team standings with a 299. Fresno State trails by six strokes at 305 and Boise State and Nevada both finished with a 306.

Defending champion and 31st-ranked San Jose State is last in the seven-team tournament with a 310.

Fresno State's Laura Luethke shot a 2-under 70 to lead the field.

Other golfers from Hawai'i competing include Idaho's Kelly Nakashima (T12th, 76, Baldwin '04), Boise State's Iris Ocariza (T16th, 77, Moanalua '06), New Mexico State's Lehua Wise (T23rd, 79, Kaua'i '03) and Jennie Pleas of Nevada (34th, 82, Kaua'i '04).

The second round will be today and the final round tomorrow.

WOMEN'S SAILING

HAWAI'I PLACES FOURTH

The University of Hawai'i women's sailing team ended its 2006-07 campaign with a fourth-place finish at the Pacific Coast Sailing Conference Championship, Sunday at the Treasure Island Center in San Francisco.

UH totaled 102 points to finish behind Stanford (48), UC Irvine (75) and USC (90). As the top two finishers, Stanford and UC Irvine earned automatic bids to the ICSA Women's National Championship, May 23-25 in Norfolk, Va. The Rainbow Wahine, meanwhile, failed to qualify for the nationals for just the second time in the last 10 years.

Becky Mabardy skippered UH to fifth in the A division and Crystal Bronte guided UH to third in the B division. Pamela Magasinn, Elise St. Claire and Leanne Horvitz served as crew members.
