Ninety-foot towers? One hurdle cleared

Advertiser Staff

The city Planning Commission approved a zone change last week that will allow a developer to build a housing complex 30 feet higher on the condition that the rear yard setback be increased to 37 feet.

The zone change request to build two 90-foot towers on Hawai'i Kai Drive, and other buildings in a stair-stepped design, will be considered at the City Council Zoning Committee in June.

Called Hale Alii, the project is being proposed by 21st Century Homes Inc. and will have a maximum of 296 units.

In 2002 the land was rezoned to 40 and 60 feet height limits because of concerns about density.
