The voyaging canoe Hokule'a is poised to start its journey to Japan at the first sign of favorable weather, crew members reported yesterday.
The Hokule'a, Alingano Maisu and escort boat Kama Hele returned to Yap in time for Easter after visiting Palau.
Sesario Sewralur, son of master navigator Mau Piailug, was the lead navigator as they returned from Palau.
At Yap, the Alingano Maisu will end its voyage, having been given by the Hawaiian voyaging community to the people of Micronesia in thanks for Piailug's decision to teach noninstrument navigation to Hawaiians.
The Hokule'a will take on several new crew members in Yap and await good weather before embarking on what's expected to be a 12- to 14-day passage to Okinawa.
After Okinawa, the canoe is to visit Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Fukuoka, Oshima, Hiroshima, Uwajima and Yokohama.
