MILILANI — Led by its defense, Kahuku routed Farrington, 38-0, in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East game last night.

Kahuku's Shiloah Te'o scored on a 2-yard run with four minutes and 17 seconds left in the third quarter, and the Red Raiders reeled off 32 points in the final eight minutes and 11 seconds.

Kahuku improved to 4-2 overall, while Farrington dropped to 4-2. The teams entered the game tied for fourth in The Advertiser's statewide poll of media and coaches.

Kahuku, Farrington, McKinley and Castle are tied for first in the OIA Red East at 3-1.

Defense was the name of the game in the first half. Farrington managed just 50 yards passing and zero yards rushing. The teams combined for seven punts and four turnovers in the opening half.

Kahuku finally broke the tie when Te'o scored on his only carry. "We had some problems getting the ball into the end zone on the goal line last week, so coach (Reggie Torres, Kahuku head coach) wanted some bigger guys in," he said.

The drive was extended by a pivotal conversion on fourth-and-12 on a completion from Richard Torres to Lehi Aumua.

"That gave them the momentum," said Farrington head coach Randall Okimoto. The 16-yard pass was followed by a 17-yard end-around by John Gomez, which set up Te'o's run one play later.

Farrington was effective moving the ball on its next drive. However, Hercules Sula fumbled after a reception from Maeli Siliga, and Kahuku's Gary Nagy recovered.

The Red Raiders gave the ball right back on a fumbled snap by Torres, and the Govs' Timothy Fa'atea fell on the loose ball. Four plays later, on fourth-and-one, the give was to Sula, who was stopped short of the first down.

"We wanted to earn some respect," Te'o said of the defense. "Every time we stopped them we knew that the momentum was coming and we were gaining momentum by stopping them."

However, on the ensuing Kahuku drive, Torres again fumbled and Fa'atea was there to recover again. The Govs were forced to start the drive on their 4-yard line. After a Sula run for no gain, Siliga was pressured on second down and threw a pass that was intercepted by junior linebacker Paipai Falemalu, who returned it 10 yards for a score.

"We made costly mistakes and their defense made plays," said Okimoto.

Farrington lost four fumbles and was intercepted three times.

On third-and-eight from their 23-yard line, the snap went over Siliga's head and Kahuku defensive end Alema Tachibana fell on the ball in the end zone to stretch the Red Raiders' lead. Kaika Sasaoka's extra point made it 19-0 with 7:15 left.

Siliga was intercepted by Te'o on the next play from scrimmage and returned thge ball 25 yards for a score.

The Red Raiders added two more scores, including a 100-yard interception return by Pita Tanuvasa as time expired.

Farrington's usually potent passing attack was held to just 97 yards and minus-2 yards rushing. The Governors were 1 of 11 on third-down conversions, and had just three first downs.

"We never got into a rhythm," said Okimoto.

The Red Raiders pounded out 229 yards rushing on 51 attempts.

Lehi Aumua rushed 14 times for 111 yards.

Kahuku attempted just six passes for 72 yard.

Kahuku has won the past 10 meetings against Farrington.
