After scoring three goals in its past five games, the University of Hawai'i women's soccer team is focusing on its offense in its final tournament, the Ohana Hotels & Resorts Soccer Invitational.

Hawai'i (5-2-2) plays Detroit tonight at 7 and Cal State Northridge Monday at 5 at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Detroit (2-4) and Cal State Northridge (4-4) play Saturday night at 7.

"I think we're getting the opportunities, but it's just our finishing," Hawai'i captain and junior midfielder Jessica Domingo said. "(At practice) we focused on finishing shots and being more offensive-minded."

With almost half the season finished — and Hawai'i's defense "strong" and "sturdy" according to Domingo — Hawai'i coach Pinsoom Tenzing said offense is his main priority.

"We need to score goals, and I think our emphasis for the rest of the season will be to expose the team to different possibilities to scoring goals," he said. "You can score running with the ball, score off crosses, combination plays, dribbling into the penalty box, that sort of thing."

Increased scoring could help the Rainbow Wahine break a streak of five straight overtime games.

Tenzing is looking to get the offense going against Detroit, which boasts wins over Toledo and Saginaw Valley State and losses to Eastern Kentucky, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Michigan State.

"I think we should be able to score against them," he said. "They played schools I don't know anything about — in other words they haven't played any big-name schools."

Detroit has scored three goals and allowed six through six games. It is the first meeting between the schools.

Domingo hopes the Rainbow Wahine will score multiple goals as they did in 3-0 wins over Kent State and Winthrop three weekends ago.

"We're hoping that we'll go in there and it will be a high scoring game and get everyone playing time," she said. "Just so our morale will be up. It will help the confidence level of our strikers. We know it's not one person's job to score goals. They must feel a little stressed, but I don't believe their spirits are down at all. As long as we're playing hard and trying our best, and playing good soccer, we're hoping the scoring goals will come in time."

Tenzing said they plan to "shore up their game" against Detroit.

"I keep telling my kids there is no doubt we're going to play lovely soccer, but can they score? The primary concentration will be on scoring goals," he said. "We spend all of spring and preseason in developing our style of play and I'm satisfied with the way we're playing.

"I'm tickled pink with defense. We haven't conceded any earned goals."

Cal State Northridge, however, is a "horse of a different color," according to Tenzing.

The Matadors and Rainbow Wahine played two common teams. Cal State Northridge was blanked 4-0 by San Francisco — which UH tied, 0-0, Sunday — and defeated Northern Arizona, 3-0, which UH beat, 2-1, in overtime.

Cal State Northridge recently fell to fourth-ranked UCLA, 1-0, Friday.

"That tells me they may be an up-and-down team," Tenzing said. "We're hoping to catch them on the down."

The Matadors spread the scoring around, with 11 different players scoring at least one. Cal State Northridge leads the series between the teams 3-2. The last time they played, UH defeated Northridge, 2-0, on Sept. 5, 2003.
