Boyfriend faces assault charge

Police charged a 42-year-old man Saturday with second-degree assault for allegedly beating his girlfriend Tuesday in 'Ewa Beach.

Stanley Almeida's initial appearance is scheduled today at District Court. Prosecutors are requesting bail of $100,000. Almeida is accused of punching the woman in the face and striking her head against a concrete wall after she went to an apartment complex against his wishes. The alleged beating took place at 3 a.m. Police arrested Almeida after a talking to a witness on Friday.


HUSBAND CHARGED IN THREAT WITH GUN

A 41-year-old man was charged yesterday with burglary and terroristic threatening in the first degree and a firearms offense in connection with a domestic violence incident Saturday in 'Ewa Beach.

According to police, Renato Ancheta went to the residence of his estranged wife at 3:50 p.m. with a gun and threatened to kill her. A neighbor who was at the woman's home intervened and disarmed Ancheta but was not able to prevent him from forcing the woman back into her home, police said.

Police later arrested Ancheta at the woman's home. No serious injuries were reported.

Ancheta is scheduled for an initial appearance at District Court today. His bail is $50,000.

MAN WOUNDED AT HPD FIRING RANGE

A 30-year-old man was in serious condition yesterday after a bullet ricocheted and hit him in the neck at the Honolulu Police Department Firing Range in Koko Head, according to city Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic.

The man was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition but was later in serious condition, he said. Police and emergency personnel responded to the call shortly after 10:30 a.m. yesterday.

PASSENGER IN KA'U DIES OF INJURIES

A Big Island man died yesterday from injuries he suffered in a one-vehicle crash Saturday on Hawai'i Belt Road (Route 11) just south of the 54-mile marker in the Ka'u district, police said.

The 68-year-old man from Hawaiian Ocean View Estates was a passenger in a 1979 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by another Hawaiian Ocean View Estates man heading south on Route 11. The truck ran off the right shoulder of the road, hit a culvert and overturned at about 11:25 a.m., police said.

The 64-year-old driver was treated at Ka'u Hospital and released, but the passenger died at Kona Community Hospital at 3:46 a.m. yesterday.

Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors. The vehicle did not appear to have seat belts, police said.

A negligent homicide investigation has begun and an autopsy ordered, police said.

MOTORCYCLIST IN FATAL CRASH NAMED

Maui police have identified the motorcyclist killed Saturday in a collision on South Kihei Road as Devin Elliott, 22.

According to police, Elliott was thrown from his speeding 2001 Suzuki 750cc motorcycle when it broadsided a 2002 Mercedes two-door sedan making a U-turn at 12:01 a.m. Saturday. Elliott, who was not wearing a helmet, died at the scene.

A man and woman in the car were treated at Maui Memorial Medical Center and released.

The death is Maui's 14th traffic fatality of the year.
