Delegating works, when it's done right

Q. I have recently been entrusted with a large and important project, and six to eight people will be working beneath me. I have never been in charge of such a large group before, and I am unsure as to the best way to delegate various aspects of the project. Do you have any suggestions on the best way to assign tasks and ensure that they are completed thoroughly and appropriately?
A. Delegation can be an efficient way to complete an assignment — or it can lead to bungled projects and an incongruent final product. Not to worry, though: when implemented properly, delegation leads to high-quality products and a more constructive use of time. Here are some pointers:
1. Select the right person. Different people are suited for different tasks.
2. Plan the delegation. Include everyone in the planning.
3. Review the plan. Make sure that everyone understands the steps you will take to reach your goal.
4. Provide freedom. Don't micromanage; you chose the right people, so trust their decisions.
5. Follow up.
