Motorcyclist, 21, crashes in tunnel

A motorcyclist was critically injured last night in a crash on the Kane'ohe side of the Wilson Tunnel on Likelike Highway.

The man, 21, was taken with a critical leg injury to The Queen's Medical Center after the crash, which was reported around 8:50 p.m.

Police closed Likelike Highway in the Kane'ohe-bound direction from Valley View to the Wilson Tunnel.




WAI'ANAE

SHOOTING SUSPECT HEADS FOR COURT

A 32-year-old Wai'anae man has been charged in an alleged shooting Tuesday at Poka'i Bay.

Nelson J. Kealohi, who was arrested Friday in Nanakuli, was charged with reckless endangering, terroristic threatening and firearm offenses, including being a felon in possession. He is being held in lieu of $75,000 bail. Kealohi appears today in District Court.

Kealohi is accused of shooting at a man and woman in a parked car. The woman is Kealohi's former girlfriend, according to police. No injuries were reported.




WAIPI'O

PICKUP TRUCK HITS PEDESTRIAN

A pedestrian was critically injured yesterday when he was struck by a pickup truck on Kamehameha Highway, 71 feet east of Kipapa Street in Waipi'o.

The injured man, 27, of an 'Ewa Beach address was taken to The Queen's Medical Center. The accident was reported to police at about 12:15 p.m.

According to police, the man was outside a marked crosswalk when he was struck by a 2006 Nissan Frontier which was turning left onto Kamehameha Highway. The 56-year-old Mililani woman driving the truck was not injured.

VICTIMS' NAMES NOT RELEASED

The Medical Examiner's office yesterday did not release the names of three people who died Saturday in accidents until their tentative identities were confirmed or relatives had been notified.

The three are: a 31-year-old Kane'ohe man who died at Straub Hospital & Clinic after being injured in a bodysurfing accident at Sandy Beach; a 38-year-old Downtown Honolulu man who died at The Queen's Medical Center after a paragliding accident at Makapu'u, and a man, 20, killed after jumping about 25 feet off rocks at Kapena Falls in Nu'uanu.

The paraglider had more than 100 paraglider flights, and also was a pilot of fixed aircraft, said Alex Colby, president of the Hawai'i Paragliding Association. "He had a good launch but shortly after the launch he was seen swinging side to side for unknown reasons," Colby said. "That's what brought him into contact with the power lines and some people saw a blue flash. After that he hit the ridge top."

MAIL CARRIER WHO DIED IS IDENTIFIED

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office today identified a mail carrier who died Saturday when her U.S. Postal Service vehicle struck a lamppost in Niu Valley as Caron Lee, 50, of Hawai'i Kai.



AUTOPSY DONE ON HOUSE FIRE VICTIM

The woman killed in a Kuli'ou'ou fire Oct. 15 was identified yesterday by the Medical Examiner's office as Masae Kiyota, 81.

The cause of death was "smoke inhalation and thermal burns due to a house fire" that was accidental, according to autopsy findings. Kiyota's sister was rescued from the home at 256 Kuli'ou'ou Road by neighbors Peter and Harris Phengvath.




KAKA'AKO

WOMAN FOUND AT PIER 1 DROWNED

A woman whose body was recovered Thursday night at Pier 1 has been identified by the Medical Examiner's office as Bong Sun Wang, 63, of Kaka'ako. An autopsy determined Wang drowned. Police are investigating the case as an unattended death.




EAST HONOLULU

DETOXIFICATION TO BE DISCUSSED

The 'Aina Haina Public Library will present a program on "Healthy Detoxification with Natural Medicine" at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the library's meeting room.

The presentation will be by Dr. Laurie Steelsmith, a licensed naturopathic physician and acupuncturist.
