Iacovelli, Buerger take PacWest cross country titles

Hawai'i Pacific's Todd Iacovelli and Inga Buerger won individual titles, Brigham Young-Hawai'i took the men's championship and Hawai'i-Hilo captured the women's crown yesterday at the Pacific West Conference Cross Country Championships in Hilo.

Iacovelli completed the 8-kilometer race in 25 minutes, 6 seconds, with teammate Brandon Laan (26:10) placing second.

Buerger finished the 6-kilometer course in 24:56, with BYUH's Amanda Whittford finishing second in 25:36.

Golden Harper placed third in 26:17 to lead the BYUH men to a low-best 38 points. Hilo (43) placed second, followed by HPU (49), Notre Dame de Namur (80), Chaminade (115) and Grand Canyon.

Ashley Benson's third-place finish in 25:41 helped the Hilo women score 35 points. BYUH (39) finished second, followed by HPU (54) and Notre Dame de Namur (98). Chaminade and Grand Canyon did not field enough runners to score.


SOCCER

BYUH SWEEPS UH-HILO

Emily Mearns scored two goals and Brigham Young-Hawai'i scored four times in the second half to pull away from Hawai'i-Hilo, 5-1, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference women's soccer match at La'ie.

Kahanu Ah Puck had a goal and an assist, and Kristina Nibley and Jenny Brown also scored for the Seasiders (11-3 overall, 7-1 PacWest).

Karen Weatherby's goal in the 53rd minute helped the Vulcans (4-10-1, 2-5-1) tie the score at 1.

Also yesterday, Aaron Nonnenmacher and Michael Akinaka scored as BYUH beat Hilo, 2-0, in a PacWest men's match.

Nicholas Vicchrilli assisted on both goals for the Seasiders (7-4-1 overall, 5-2-1 PacWest).

The Vulcans fell to 5-8-1, 2-5-1.


TENNIS

UH PLAYERS ADVANCE

University of Hawai'i freshmen Andreas Weber and Sascha Heinemann each won two matches yesterday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Wilson/ITA Northwest Region Championships at Stanford, Calif.

Weber beat California's Eoin Heavey, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, in the round of 32 and Washington's Andy Kuharsky, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, in the round of 16.

Heinemann beat Cal's Daniel Sebescen, 6-3, 6-2, and Stanford's Richard Wire, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Heinemann and Jeff Fitch won their round of 32 doubles match while teammates Chad Faulk and Derrick Lajola lost.

Also yesterday, UH senior Sabita Walkup advanced to the consolation semifinals of the West Region in San Diego.

Walkup, the 20th-seeded player in the tournament, defeated Cal State Northridge's Silvia Gutierrez by walkover in the round of 16 and ousted Anete Bandere of Pepperdine, 6-1, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.

Walkup will play the winner of UCLA's Anna Victoria Lind and UC Santa Barbara's Marta Simic today.


VOLLEYBALL

CHAMINADE SWEEPS

Evelyn Bluthenthal had 17 kills as Chaminade swept Notre Dame de Namur, 30-26, 30-23, 30-22, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match at Belmont, Calif.

Trina Kauliakamoa added 13 kills and Marijana Stanic had 15 digs for the Silverswords (16-4 overall, 11-2 PacWest).

Marissa Miller had 14 kills and 15 digs for the Argos (10-21, 0-12).
