MIYAJIMA ADVANCES TO LPGA FINAL QUALIFYING
Maui's Shayna Miyajima shot a final-round 76 yesterday to finish in a tie for 24th at the LPGA sectional qualifying and advance to the final qualifying tournament next month.
Miyajima had a 9-over-par 297 total. The top 30 and ties advanced, with 35 golfers shooting 299 or better. Medalists were Ohio's Angie Hill (66-286) and Thailand's Nontaya Srisawang (70-286). Tara Bateman (73-287) was the only other player to finish under par.
The sectional was played at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla.
Miyajima, a Baldwin graduate, was the 1999 state girls high school champion.
The final qualifying field is made up of the top 30 finishers from both sectionals, current LPGA Tour members attempting to improve their status and players who finished sixth through 15th on the final 2006 Duramed Futures Tour money list.
Final qualifying is a 90-hole, five-day event. The cut, historically held after 54 holes, will now reduce the field to the low 70 players and ties after 72 holes.
