Vercruyssen, Madanay compete in Japan event

 •  Size 15, bad knees, finds right fit

Nani Vercruyssen, a 14-year-old freshman at Roosevelt High School, and Spencer Madanay, a 13-year-old seventh-grader at Punahou, recently competed in the All Japan (Senior Elite National) Championships.

The event, held in Sukagawa City, Japan, was to determine rankings for the Japanese national team. Vercruyssen and Madanay were the only two foreigners in the event.

Vercruyssen finished ninth, with a total score of 59.8. Madanay was 47th, with 53.3 points.

Vercruyssen is competing this weekend in the Slavic Games in Vitebsk, Belarus.

At the Slavic Games, Vercruyssen and the U.S. delegation will be competing against 200 athletes from Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Uzbekistan, Moldova, Poland, Germany, New Zealand and Mexico.

On the trampoline, Vercruyssen is ranked seventh in the world in her age group (13-14) and 20th among all juniors (17-under).
