A 62-year-old Kane'ohe man was critically injured early yesterday in a single-car crash near Waialua on Kaukonahua Road, 1.4 miles south of Poamoho Street.

Police traffic investigators said the man was traveling toward the North Shore on Kaukonahua Road when he lost control of his 2001 Ford Taurus sedan, veered to the left side of the roadway and struck a utility pole at 6:05 a.m., police said.

He was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital with critical head and multiple body injuries. The man was later transferred in "extremely critical" condition to The Queen's Medical Center, said police vehicular homicide investigator Sgt. John Agno.

It appeared the driver had been speeding, police said. The incident forced the closure of Kaukonahua Road until 9:06 a.m.

KAUA'I

WAREHOUSE HAS CHEMICAL LEAK

Hazardous materials specialists from Pacific Environmental Corp. yesterday were dealing with a chemical leak in a Lihu'e Industrial Park II warehouse.

The chemical, methyltrichlorosilane is a highly flammable substance. It is poisonous when inhaled, with the potential for vapor explosion indoors.

Kaua'i County spokeswoman Mary Daubert yesterday said PENCO personnel tested the air quality in the Trex Hawai'i warehouse Saturday night and determined that the level of contamination was low enough to allow a team to enter the bunker at midnight to turn off the valves on four storage tanks.

The PENCO team re-entered the bunker yesterday morning and disconnected all of the storage tanks.

The leak occurred Saturday at 8:30 a.m. during the transfer of methyltrichlorosilane from a storage tank to a processing tank. Dave Kane, vice president of Trex Hawai'i's Kaua'i operations, said the tank sprang a leak due to a faulty valve on the storage tank, Daubert said.
