Chun wins U.S. Open qualifier at Waikoloa

Honolulu's Philip Chun shot a 3-under-par 67 to earn medalist honors in yesterday's U.S. Open Local Qualifier golf tournament at Waikoloa Beach & Golf Resort.
Alex Ching, a 16-year-old Punahou School sophomore, finished second at 2-under 68 to earn the other qualifying spot.
Both will join other U.S. Open local qualifiers in a 36-hole sectional qualifying tournament at Kaua'i's Po'ipu Bay Golf Course on June 5. The winner of that tournament will join the field for this year's 106th U.S. Open Championship at Winged Foot, June 15-18, in Mamaroneck, N.Y.
Honoka'a junior Sean Maekawa of Paauilo shot a 1-under 69.

EX-UH FOOTBALL PLAYER KILLED IN AUTO ACCIDENT
Former University of Hawai'i football player Andy Phillips will be remembered as a "fun-loving person who loved life," his former UH line coach said yesterday.
"He was just a great, wonderful guy," said Mike Cavanaugh, a former UH coach now with Oregon State.
Phillips, 28, and Spencer Clark, 19, a successful driver on the NASCAR Autozone West Series Circuit, died Sunday evening in an automobile accident near Albuquerque, N.M., UH officials announced yesterday.
Phillips was a crew member for Clark's Allegiant Air Racing team.
Phillips, who earned his degree in 1999, was the Warriors' starting offensive left guard in 1999. That team won nine games, including an upset of Oregon State in the O'ahu Bowl.
Known as "Big Red," Phillips was the vocal leader of an offensive line that also included tackles Adrian Klemm and Kaulana Noa, right guard Manly Kanoa III and center Dustin Owen. Klemm and Noa were selected in the 2000 NFL draft; Phillips, Owen and Kanoa received NFL tryouts.
SURFING
ANDY AND BRUCE IRONS, PATACCHIA WIN AT FIJI
Three-time former world champion Andy Irons of Kaua'i advanced to the third round of the Globe WCT Fiji men's surfing contest yesterday.
The second round was completed in spectacular 6- to 8-foot waves at Cloudbreak, Tavarua, Fiji.
Irons defeated Fiji's Ratu Aca in the second round, 13.5-6.5. Irons is the No. 1 seed for the contest because defending world champion Kelly Slater of Florida withdrew because of injured ribs.
Hawai'i surfers Bruce Irons and Fred Patacchia Jr. advanced to the third round on Sunday.
Three Hawai'i surfers were eliminated in yesterday's second round: Roy Powers, Pancho Sullivan and Ian Walsh.
The contest is the fourth stop on the 2006 World Championship Tour.
