No cultural summit set in Hawai'i would be complete without a little ki ho'alu — after all, it was easygoing "slack" tuning that put the Islands on the world's musical map. And this gathering of local guitar greats resembles a rare master class.

Five slack-key legends will appear: Haunani Apoliona, who is also the head of OHA; Grammy winner Ledward "Hot Hand" Ka'apana, known for his quick, improvisational wit; Sons of Hawai'i's Dennis Kamakahi; four-finger picker Ozzie Kotani; and Cyril Pahinui, whose name and talent need no explanation.

On Friday, the group will talk story about their musical heritage and personal innovations to their discipline 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. Then 3:15 to 4:30 p.m. they'll stage a rare, collaborative concert that's being billed as "Kanikapila in the old Hawaiian style." It may take place in an auditorium, but this event is a chance to witness cultural legacy in the making — a la your uncle's backyard party, just more da kine.
