Driver critical in motorcycle crash

A 26-year-old man was in critical condition after the motorcycle he was driving rear-ended a car on H-1 Freeway near the Waimalu off-ramp yesterday morning, according to a city Emergency Medical Services official.
The accident was reported at 9:50 a.m. in the westbound lanes.
The man was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. The two occupants of the car were taken to St. Francis Medical Center-West with minor injuries.

TEEN IN COLLISION DIES FROM INJURIES
A teenager struck by a sport utility vehicle Sunday near the Waimanalo Town Center has died.
Travis "Kila" Guerrero, 14, was headed home on a moped when the moped and the SUV collided just as he reached the 7-Eleven store across from the town center.
His father, Lawrence Guerrero, said the Waimanalo Elementary and Intermediate School student was taken off life support yesterday at 3:30 p.m. after family and friends said their last goodbyes.

MAN CHARGED IN SEX ASSAULT OF GIRL
A 56-year-old man was charged yesterday with sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl near Chinatown Wednesday night, police said.
Paul W. Lincoln was charged with one count of third-degree sexual assault and promoting a dangerous drug in the third degree. He was being held in lieu of $15,000 bail.
Both are felonies punishable by up to five years in jail and a $10,000 fine.
Lincoln has 30 prior convictions, including eight felonies, but none for sex assault, according to the Hawai'i Criminal Justice Data Center.
Lincoln was arrested at 7:15 p.m. in Beretania Community Park after a police officer on his dinner break witnessed Lincoln fondling the 8-year-old girl on a playground apparatus, police said.
Police also found Lincoln in possession of a small quantity of crystal methamphetamine.

PIPELINE REPAIRS TIE UP TRAFFIC
Hawai'i Kai-bound traffic was snarled yesterday as workers from The Gas Co. made emergency repairs to a synthetic natural gas pipeline under Kalaniana'ole Highway.
The pipe was damaged when a contractor apparently drilled into the line about 10 a.m. yesterday near Hawai'i Loa Street.
The makai-most lane on the eastbound side of the highway was coned off while the pipe is repaired, gas company spokes-man Steve Golden said.
"The damaged pipe is several feet under asphalt and concrete so it will probably take several hours just to get to it," Golden said.
PEARL HARBOR
SAILORS TAKE PART IN NAVAL EXERCISE
More than 500 sailors based at Pearl Harbor will leave on a four-month deployment this morning aboard the USS Hopper and USS Crommelin. Also being deployed is the California-based U.S. Coast Guard cutter Sherman, which arrived at Pearl Harbor on Monday.
The ships will travel to various locations in the Western Pacific to take part in the Cooperation Afloat and Training exercise, the Navy said in a statement released today. CARAT is a regularly scheduled military training exercise involving Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei and the Philippines.
