UH's Van Belkum honored

Hawai'i utility player Iefke Van Belkum was named the MVP at last weekend's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Women's Water Polo Championships in Irvine, Calif.
The sophomore from The Netherlands scored 11 goals in four games, including three in a 10-9 semifinal victory over top-seeded USC.
Goalie Meike De Nooy and utility Kelly Mason also were named to the all-tournament team for the Rainbow Wahine, who finished second and later earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Championships at UC Davis, May 12 to 14.
De Nooy, a junior from the Netherlands, made 27 saves and held opponents to 28 goals in four games. Mason, a freshman from New Zealand, scored nine goals.

HAMAMOTO LEADS WAC
Jarret Hamamoto fired a championship-low 68 to grab a share of the lead and lift the University of Hawai'i into fourth place yesterday at the Western Athletic Conference Championships on the Crane Creek Country Club course in Boise, Idaho.
Hamamoto's 3-under round put him at 1-under 141, tied for the lead with New Mexico State's Matt Edwards. Fresno State's Brian Kelley is third at 143.
The Warriors shot a second consecutive 10-over 294, tied for the day's best score, to stand at 20-over 588. New Mexico State leads with 13-over 581.
UH-HILO STILL SEVENTH
The Hawai'i-Hilo men's golf team shot 8-over 292, 15 strokes better than its opening-round score, but remained in seventh place yesterday in the Northwest/West Super Regional at the Legacy Golf Resort in Phoenix.
The Vulcans are at 599, 31 strokes behind leader Cal State Bakersfield.
Hilo's Kevin Shimomura shot 1-over 72 and his 148 total puts him in 24th. St. Martin's Shane Prante leads with 4-under 138.
OPEN DEADLINE TODAY
Today at 11 a.m. is the entry deadline for the 2006 U.S. Women's Open. Players need a handicap index of 4.4 or lower to be eligible. Hawai'i's local qualifier is May 18 at Ko Olina Golf Club, with the 36-hole sectional June 13, at the same site.

Entry deadline for the U.S. Senior Open is May 31. Golfers must have an index of 3.4 or better. The Hawai'i qualifier is June 19 at Waialae Country Club.
The U.S. Women's Open is June 29 to July 2 at Newport Country Club in Newport, R.I. The U.S. Senior Open is July 6 to 9 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
Hawai'i has 144 golfers registered for the four U.S. Open qualifiers that will be played here this month. In all, the U.S. Golf Association accepted 8,584 entries for the 2006 U.S. Open, which will be June 15 to 18 at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y.
It is the third highest number of entries in Open history, 464 shy of the record 9,048 entries accepted for the 2005 Open in Pinehurst, N.C.
Local qualifying at 110 sites begins May 10. Sectional qualifying at 14 sites will be from May 29 to June 6, with Hawai'i's sectional June 5 at Po'ipu Bay.
