Effendi, a professor from Indonesia, has been a Fulbright visiting scholar at the University of Hawai'i. He was born in a small town in Central Java, attended an Islamic boarding school, then attended a U.S. high school on a scholarship.

He's the author of "Islam and the State in Indonesia."

INTRO TO SPIRITUAL HEALTH, HEALING

Giulia Plum will discuss "A Spiritual Approach to Health and Healing" in a free Christian Science lecture at 2 p.m. tomorrow in the Ilima Room of the Ala Moana Hotel. The discussion is sponsored by the First Church of Christ, Scientist.

A former hospital staffer, Plum, of Norwalk, Conn., focuses on healing physical and mental problems by awakening a patient's spirituality.

SCROLLS SCHOLAR GIVING LECTURE

Lawrence H. Schiffman, a professor of Hebrew and Judaic studies at New York University, will discuss "The Dead Sea Scrolls and the History of Judaism" in a free lecture at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in the La'ie North Stake Center, at the corner of Naniloa Loop and Lanihuli Street.

Schiffman, an Orthodox Jew, is a scholar of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Judaism of late antiquity, and the history of Jewish law and Talmudic literature. He wrote "Reclaiming the Dead Sea Scrolls."

The free Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit at the visitor's center at the La'ie temple closes March 31.

HARVARD CHAPLAIN AT ST. CLEMENT'S

The Rev. Peter Gomes, chaplain of Harvard's Memorial Church, will discuss "The Good News: From the Bible to the Gospels" at 5 p.m. March 26 in the Vi and Paul Loo Parish House at St. Clement's Episcopal Church.

Gomes also will preach at the 7:30 and 10:15 a.m. services that day at St. Clement's.

Gomes, who lectures throughout America and the United Kingdom, is also a professor at Harvard University and author of "The Good Book: Reading the Bible with Mind and Heart."

His presentation is free.

BAHAI FAITHFUL TO CELEBRATE

The six Bahai communities of O'ahu will celebrate Naw-Ruz — the celebration of the new year, as the first day of the first month of the Iranian solar year — at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Bahai National Center, 3264 Allan Place in Nu'uanu.

A free community dinner at 6:30 p.m. will be followed by a keiki program and inspirational stories.

About 100 volunteers will be honored at Catholic Charities Hawai'i's 10th annual Island Treasures of Hawai'i event at 5:30 p.m. April 28 at the Sheraton Waikiki.
