Rainbow Wahine win two in softball

Valana Manuma batted 4 for 4 and Tyleen Tausaga hit two three-run home runs to lead Hawai'i's 17-hit attack in a 16-1 victory over Mississippi Valley State in the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium yesterday.

UH's Justine Smethurst pitched a three-hitter in a 4-1 victory over Florida International in the Rainbow Wahine's second game yesterday.

UH improved to 9-7.

In UH's first game, Jessica Morton pitched a five-inning complete game, allowing a run and five hits. She struck out seven and walked none.

Tausaga hit three-run homers in the first and second innings to help UH to a 7-0 lead. Clare Warick hit a three-run homer in a seven-run third to give UH a 14-1 lead.

UH's Brandi Peiler hit a solo home run in the second inning.

KESSELL PITCHES 1-HITTER

Courtney Kessell pitched a one-hitter to lift Hawai'i Pacific to a 1-0 victory in the second game of a doubleheader with Concordia (Calif.) yesterday at Kailua field.

Concordia won the first game, 6-2.

Kessell struck out four and walked five to hand Concordia (18-1) its first loss of the season. HPU is 8-4.

COLLEGE BASEBALL



TEMPLE SHUTS OUT HILO

Dan Brady had a two-run homer and a run-scoring single, and Arshwin Asjes and Rob Licata combined on a four-hitter to lead Temple to a 5-0 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo at Wong Stadium in Hilo.

Temple is 2-3. UH-Hilo is 3-13.

Asjes struck out four, walked one and allowed three hits in six innings. Licata struck out three and walked none.

Michael Higa batted 2 for 3 for the Vulcans.

HPU LOSES, WINS

Ryson Mauricio hit a double to score pinch-runner Jordan Mikami in the sixth inning to lift Hawai'i Pacific to a 4-3 victory over Grand Canyon (Ariz.) in the second game of a doubleheader at Hans L'Orange Park.

In the first game, Tristan Blalock hit an RBI double in the top of the 10th inning to lead Grand Canyon to a 5-4 victory.

HPU is 11-2. Grand Canyon is 8-11.


MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

PENN LOSES IN UFC

Hilo's BJ Penn lost a split decision to Canada's Georges St. Pierre in the co-main event of the UFC 58: USA vs. Canada mixed martial arts card Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

Two judges scored the fight 29-28 in favor of St. Pierre, and the third judge had it 29-28 in favor of Penn.

Both fighters weighed 170 pounds for the non-title bout. St. Pierre improved to 12-1; Penn dropped to 10-3-1.

HAMAMOTO WINS

University of Hawai'i golfer Jarett Hamamoto shot a final-round 1-under-par 70 yesterday to edge Kevin Hayashi by a stroke to win the Hilo Invitational at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.

Hamamoto, a Waiakea High alum, finished at 137. Hayashi shot 69-69—138.

CHEERLEADING



MILILANI CAPTURES OIA

Mililani scored 330.5 points to win the O'ahu Interscholastic Association cheerleading championship at Leilehua High School on Saturday.

Moanalua won the junior varsity title.
