A 30-year-old Wai'anae man has died of injuries suffered when an all-terrain vehicle on which he was riding collided with a car late Friday night.

Richard Matautia died at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, the city medical examiner's office said. He had been taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.

Authorities said a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta driven by a 27-year-old man collided with Matautia's ATV at about 10:20 p.m. on Farrington Highway, near the entrance to Wai'anae Regional Park.

Matautia suffered head injuries, the medical examiner's office said.

The driver of the Jetta and his female passenger were unhurt, police said.

HILO MAN DROWNS AT LELEIWI BEACH

A Hilo man apparently drowned Sunday while diving at Leleiwi Beach Park in Keaukaha.

Police said Yoseph Albos, 47, was diving about 1 p.m. when a friend noticed he was in distress. The friend tried to help Albos, then called 911. Fire Department workers attempted to resuscitate Albos. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:17 p.m., police said.

MAN WEARING WIG ROBS CREDIT UNION

A man wearing a blond wig held up the Pearlridge branch of the Hawai'i State Federal Credit Union yesterday afternoon.

Police said the man entered the bank about 5:45 p.m. and handed a teller a demand note that said he had a gun. The teller handed the man an undisclosed amount of cash.

In addition to the wig, police said, the robber was wearing hospital scrubs.

Police last night were not saying whether yesterday's robbery was committed by a man suspected in at least six bank robberies since October 2005. In several of those cases, the robber wore a blond wig and a fake beard.

$1.7M AWARDED FOR OFFRAMP WORK

More than $1.7 million was awarded to Queen's Health System to build an offramp extension from the H-1 Freeway to The Queen's Medical Center, Sen. Daniel K. Inouye said yesterday.

Inouye, D-Hawai'i, said the grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation will benefit residents and visitors who need healthcare or emergency services.

Hospital officials will build a right-turn lane from the eastbound H-1 Freeway offramp at Kina'u Street to Lusitana Street.

NEW QUEEN'S CLINIC GETS BLESSED

The Queen's Medical Center yesterday held a blessing ceremony for its new outpatient ambulatory clinic at Hawai'i Kai Shopping Center.

The new clinic, which is to open Thursday, has 11,000 square feet of space and replaces the storefront clinic that was at the shopping center.

The new facility will offer a variety of primary and specialty healthcare services, including laboratory, X-ray, mammography, bone density, cardiac testing, and physical and occupational therapy.

Kaua'i man vying for award in D.C.

Basilio Fuertes Jr., a retired Waimea High School teacher from Kaua'i, will represent Hawai'i at the national 2006 Jefferson Award ceremony today in Washington, D.C.

The prestigious award honors outstanding community service and volunteerism.

Fuertes, along with four other Hawai'i residents, received the 2006 Jefferson Award for Public Service on April 5. The other four recipients are: Nickie Hines, founder of Kokua Food Basket; the Rev. Bob Nakata, an advocate for homeless people; Jack Sullivan, a proponent of community soccer programs; and Fred Blas, an active volunteer in the Puna community.

Of the approximately 150 recipients representing their states, five will be chosen at the national level for their volunteerism.

The Jefferson Awards are sponsored in communities throughout the United States by local media partners. Hawai'i sponsors are The Honolulu Advertiser and KGMB-9.

KIDS' MCDONALD'S EVENTS AT LIBRARIES

The state Public Library System and McDonald's Restaurants of Hawaii will promote the libraries' summer reading program with "It's Book Time with Ronald McDonald," a series of free, interactive programs at 10 public libraries.
