Watabu five shots off lead in NCAA golf

Nevada senior Casey Watabu, a 2001 Kaua'i High graduate, shot an opening-round 2-under 70 yesterday and was in a tie for 15th at the NCAA men's golf championship in Sunriver, Ore.
Loyola Marymount senior Chaz Inouye, a 2002 St. Anthony alum, shot a 1-over 73 and was in a tie for 68th.
Wake Forest's Kyle Reifers shot a 7-under 65 at the 7,630-yard Sunriver Resort course to take a one-stroke lead and help the Demon Deacons forge a three-shot advantage in the team competition with 11-under 277. UCLA is second.
The nation's top 30 men's Division I golf teams and six individuals whose teams did not qualify are in the field of 156 players participating in the four-day tournament.

UH'S WICHMANN INVITED TO NCAA MEET
University of Hawai'i sophomore Annett Wichmann is one of 23 heptathletes invited to the NCAA Track and Field Championships, which will be held June 7 to 10, in Sacramento, Calif.
She is the only Rainbow Wahine to qualify for the national meet and first since distance runner Cheryl Smith in 2001.
Wichmann had an NCAA provisional mark of 5,374 points at the Western Athletic Conference Championship two weeks ago to qualify for the 28-athlete field. Five athletes automatically earned entry to the championships with scores of 5,500 points or more.
Wichmann's score ranked 16th nationally and was sixth best among West Region athletes. Her personal best in the heptathlon is 5,600 points, which she set prior to attending UH. That mark would place her among the top five nationally.
SOCCER
CHAMINADE TO CONDUCT TRYOUTS SATURDAY
Chaminade University is holding tryouts for both the men's and women's soccer programs Saturday at the Saint Louis School field.
The men's tryouts are from 9 to 10:30 a.m., and the women's from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Prospective players should bring a soccer ball and water. For details and to pre-register, call Chaminade coach Bob Barry at 265-4249 or the CU athletic office at 735-4790.

PAC-FIVE OUTFIELDER TRIAS TO PLAY FOR UHH
Ronel Trias, an outfielder for Pac-Five and a 2006 University High graduate, will join the Hawai'i-Hilo baseball program for the 2007 season.
Also joining the UHH program are three-year starting infielder Shane Kessel of North Thurston High School in Lacey, Wash; Karl Maas, a 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher from Merrill F. West High School in Tracy, Calif.; and Jeffrey Germain, a 6-foot-1 right-handed pitcher from Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College.
CORRECTION
MERRIFIELD WAS ILH HONORABLE MENTION
Punahou's Sophie Merrifield earned honorable mention in Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I girls basketball. Her name was omitted Tuesday.
Jodi Kamemoto of Hawai'i Baptist Academy, Courtney Gaddis of La Pietra and Siutiti Takai of St. Francis were repeat first-team selections in ILH Division II basketball. Another player was listed as a repeat first-team selection Tuesday.
