Herring, Yogi lead U.S. volleyball to win

Despite dropping its only game of the tournament, the U.S. Girls' Youth National Team qualified for the 2007 FIVB Girls' Youth World Championship (18-under) with a 25-18, 25-18, 21-25, 25-18 victory over Canada last night at the NORCECA Girls' Youth Continental Championship hosted by the University of Florida in Gainesville.
The U.S. (4-0) concludes round-robin play tonight against the Dominican Republic, the only other unbeaten team. The teams have already clinched spots in tomorrow's gold-medal match.
Kanani Herring, a Kamehameha Schools junior, had 14 points on eight kills, three aces and three blocks. Nine Team USA players scored points. Libero Sydney Yogi, a junior from Punahou, had 13 digs for the U.S., which held a 65-38 dig advantage.
"We needed to use several different lineups, and it took us a while to get it together and play our style of volleyball," Yogi said. "I was proud that we worked through our adversity and found a way to win."
The U.S. defense has allowed just 15.1 points per game in the tournament. Team USA had held opponents to 46 points or fewer per match until Canada scored 79.

FUJIKAWA 42ND
Tadd Fujikawa shot a final-round 8-over-par 80 and finished in 42nd place at the HP Boys Junior Championship yesterday in Orlando, Fla.
Ricky Fowler, of Murrieta, Calif., shot 67—278 to win by four shots over Josh Jones, of The Colony, Texas, who shot 68—282.
Fujikawa, a Moanalua High sophomore, finished at 300 with rounds of 71-76-73-80.
YOUTH BASEBALL
MILILANI 9-10 OUSTED
Blossom Valley (Calif.) scored two runs in the top of the sixth and final inning yesterday to eliminate Mililani, 9-8, in the P.O.N.Y. Mustang (ages 9-10) West Zone Regional at Chino Hills, Calif.
Mililani scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-7 lead.
HILO 12-UNDER BEATEN
Bakersfield North West, the Central California champions, defeated Hilo, 11-1, yesterday in the Cal Ripken (12-under) West Zone Regional at Woodland, Calif.
Hilo, which beat host Woodland, 3-2, in the opener Thursday, will play Arizona champion Scottsdale today.
YOUTH BOWLING
MIYASATO HELPS U.S.
Team USA, with 'Aiea's Ivan Miyasato, was in 14th in the boys competition midway through the World Tenpin Bowling Association World Youth Championships in Berlin, Germany.
Miyasato rolled a three-game series of 520 Thursday as the four-member Team USA amassed 2,244 pins.
Norway leads the 20-team field with 2,506 pins, followed by Australia with 2,470 and Sweden with 2,377.

LOOK TO NFL SEMINAR
Iolani's Wendell Look is among 51 high school football coaches who will attend the NFL Youth Football Summitt, Aug. 3 to 4, at Canton, Ohio.
Each state and Washington, D.C., will be represented during the Hall of Fame induction weekend.
Iolani won the state Division II title last season.
More than 100 youth coaches and other supporters of youth and high school football, including 19 NFL players now coaching in high school, will also attend the educational seminars.
Hall of Famers Anthony Munoz and Dave Wilcox will be guest speakers.

CHAMINADE TRYOUT SET
Chaminade women's soccer coach Andrew Gasper will conduct an open tryout on Aug. 6, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Saint Louis School field behind McCabe Gym.
Interested athletes must bring all necessary equipment, ball, water and sunscreen.
Chaminade will begin its inaugural season of women's soccer, competing in the Pacific West Conference with Brigham Young-Hawai'i, Hawai'i Pacific, Hawai'i-Hilo, Grand Canyon and Notre Dame de Namur.

CLAY TO LEAD USA
Hawai'i's Bryan Clay, the reigning world decathlon champion, will lead Team USA at the 2006 Nike Combined Events Challenge against Germany, Aug. 5 and 6, at Kansas State University in Manhattan.
Clay will be joined on Team USA by Chris Boyles, Joe Cebulski, Travis Geopfert, Ryan Olkowski, Chris Randolph and Will Thomas.
Team USA defeated host Germany at the 2005 USA vs. Germany decathlon dual meet in Bernhausen.
Team USA now has a commanding 9-3 lead in the series.
