Terry Derby, a former University of Hawai'i standout, has been named varsity baseball head coach at Damien Memorial, the school announced yesterday.
Derby, 45, replaces John Matias Sr., who coached the Monarchs for 14 years. Derby was an assistant coach last season.
Derby, who was an infielder, holds the UH record for five stolen bases in a game against Kearney State in 1983. He was drafted by Milwaukee in 1983 and played single-A ball at Beloit, Wis.
In 2004, Derby coached Mililani to a second-place finish in the PONY World Series for 13- and 14-year-olds.
