TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"American Masters: Marilyn Monroe: Still Life," 9 p.m., and "American Masters: James Dean: Sense Memories," 10 p.m., PBS. Marilyn Monroe died in 1962 at 36, beautiful and talented. James Dean died at 24, in the year (1955) when two of his films — "Rebel Without a Cause" and "East of Eden" — were released and the third, "Giant," was filmed. Both left vivid memories. These hours only try to tell part of the story. Not as good as the full "Masters" portraits, they're still much better than almost anything else. The Monroe hour focuses on her work with photographers. Some — in new interviews or on tape — describe the instinctive zest of her sessions. Norman Mailer also appears, reading from his writing. What emerges is a portrait of a fragile but lovable soul. The Dean hour focuses on only his final year. We meet the people who were young actors with him, including Martin Landau, Lois Smith and Bill Bast. They describe a young man whose life changed early when his mother died and his dad dumped him at his grandparents' Indiana farm. He emerged with charm, sensitivity and a talent that briefly did stunning things on film.

OF NOTE

"The One: Making of a Rock Star" (ABC) and "Rock Star: Supernova" (CBS), both 7 p.m. For the second straight night, these two similar shows compete. This time, each eliminates someone. For "The One," it's the first elimination. The bottom three from yesterday perform, and one of them gets eliminated.

"Bones," 7 p.m., Fox. Last week, Fox scheduled a "Bones" rerun, then changed its mind. Now it has scheduled a rerun in which at least one corpse — and maybe more — has been dug up.

"Jean-Michel Cousteau: Ocean Adventures: The Gray Whale Obstacle Course," 8 p.m., PBS. The journey of gray whales is an awesome one from spawning grounds in Baja, Calif., to feeding grounds in the Bering Strait. Along the way, they face attacks from killer whales and from some native tribes with limited hunting permits. The result is fairly interesting, despite a static style.

"So You Think You Can Dance," 8 p.m., Fox. Ten dancers compete.

"Lost," 8 and 9 p.m., ABC. In the first rerun, we learn more about Jack while he joins Locke and Sawyer, trying to catch up with Michael's search for Walt. In the second, Hurley wants to follow up on his attraction to Libby.

"Work Out" debut, 8 p.m., Bravo. For starters, this show is rich in eye candy. It's set in a fitness center, complete with hard bodies, great faces and outgoing personalities. At the core is Jackie Warner, the taut owner of a Beverly Hills fitness center. Others range from the super-flirty Rebecca to the angry Brian. Some — including Jackie and Jesse — are gay; others, including Andre and Rebecca are not. All are thoroughly interesting, making this show far more interesting than Bravo's so-so "Blow Out."
