Australia's Mitchell back to defend title

Jamie Mitchell of Australia will defend his championship in the men's open division of the 28th annual Hui O He'e Nalu Independence Day Paddleboard Race on Tuesday.

More than 150 paddleboarders are expected to compete in the race.

The 3 1/2-mile course will start at Sunset Beach and finish at Waimea Bay. The race will start at 11 a.m., and first finishers are expected to reach Waimea Bay around 30 minutes later.

Mitchell is the three-time defending champion of the men's open division.

Entries are still being accepted. Entry fee is $25 for solo paddlers and $40 per tandem team. For information call 638-8208.


GOLF

WOMEN'S AMATEUR QUALIFYING SET

A field of 13 golfers, including three-time USGA national champion Lori Planos, will compete in the U. S. Women's Amateur sectional qualifying Wednesday at Waikoloa's Beach Course.

The top two finishers advance to the U.S. Women's Amateur, Aug. 7 to 13 at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in Oregon.

College golfers, and former Jennie K. champions, Mari Chun and Amanda Wilson are back for the qualifier.

The field also includes 12-year-old Cyd Okino and Waikoloa's Tammy Surtees, 16, who is playing her first sectional. Surtees learned to golf in the Waikoloa junior program.

Players go out from 7 a.m.
