Advertiser Staff

Honolulu surfer Carissa Moore was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the girls division of the Billabong Junior World Championships yesterday.

The second day of the contest was completed in 3- to 4-foot waves at North Narrabeen, Australia.

Moore, an eighth-grader at Punahou School, was defeated by South Africa's Nikita Robb, 15.5-9.27. At 13, Moore was one of the youngest girls in the contest. She also was the only Hawai'i surfer in the girls division.

In the boys division, all six Hawai'i entries advanced to the third round.

T.J. Barron of O'ahu's North Shore had the day's best scores in his second-round victory. His two best waves received scores of 8.83 and 8.67 for a total of 17.5.

Granger Larsen of Maui also won his second-round heat.

Four other Hawai'i surfers — Kekoa Bacalso, Dustin Cuizon, Kai Barger and Hank Gaskell — advanced to the third round on Monday.

PARKING FOR SONY

Kahala Community Park will be used for free spectator parking for next week's Sony Open in Hawai'i at the Waialae Country Club.

Mayor Mufi Hannemann said Friends of Hawai'i Charities, which runs and is the primary beneficiary of the tournament, will make improvements to the park in exchange for its use during the tournament, Jan. 12 to 15.

The grass areas of the park, adjacent to Kahala Elementary School, will provide 2,500 to 3,000 additional spaces for the tournament, according to Tony Guerrero, president of the Friends of Hawai'i Charities.

Improvements to the field will include metal fences along the baseball field foul lines, relocation of a park storage facility and improvements to grass areas starting Jan. 16.
