UH-Hilo golfer leads in Bakersfield

The University of Hawai'i-Hilo's Kevin Shimomura shot a 1-under 71 yesterday to take a three-stroke lead after the first round of the CSUB Spring Invitational in Bakersfield, Calif.

Three golfers are tied for second at 74 after windy conditions at Seven Oaks Country Club.

The Vulcans are in third place at 314, and are four strokes behind leader Cal State San Bernardino in the 15-team tournament. Cal State Bakersfield is second, one stroke behind CS Bernardino.

The Vulcans' Colin Gilliam is tied for 14th at 78, Drew Surmier is at 81, Alva Wedland is at 84 and Zach Jones shot an 85.


WRESTLING

KAHUKU, FARRINGTON WIN OIA CROWNS

Kahuku won its fourth straight O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys wrestling championship and sixth in the past seven years Saturday night at Leilehua.

Daniel Morita (130 pounds), Richard Torres (135), Nevin Kamaka'ala (145) and Clellan A'alona (189) won individual titles for the Red Raiders, who scored 247 points. Pearl City was second with 128 points, followed by Kapolei (107), Mililani (106.5) and Moanalua (98).

Farrington edged Moanalua for its first OIA team championship in the girls competition, 146 points to 143.5. Kahuku was third with 142 points, followed by Kapolei (78) and Mililani (76).

Tani Ader (114 pounds), BN Alafonso (140) and Ashley Lilo (220) won individual titles for the Governors.


SURFING

POWERS, SULLIVAN WIN FIRST-ROUND HEATS

Hawai'i rookies Roy Powers and Pancho Sullivan won first-round heats in the Quiksilver Pro yesterday.

The first day of the opening event of the 2006 World Championship Tour was completed in 3- to 4-foot waves at Snapper Rocks, Queensland, Australia.

Sullivan, who is from Sunset Beach, had one of the best heats of the day, receiving scores of 8.67 and 8.0 for his two best waves for a total of 16.67.

Powers, who is from Hanalei, Kaua'i, won his heat with a two-wave score of 12.77.

It was the first WCT contest for both surfers.

Three-time former world champion Andy Irons of Kaua'i also won his first-round heat.

As first-round winners, Sullivan, Powers and Irons advanced directly to round three.

Bruce Irons of Kaua'i and Fred Patacchia Jr. of O'ahu's North Shore placed second in their respective heats and will have to compete in the elimination second round.


SOFTBALL

UH-HILO BEATS NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR, 9-2

Natalie Fujimoto belted a pair of home runs as Hawai'i-Hilo defeated Notre Dame deNamur (Calif.), 9-2, yesterday at UHH Field.

Hilo's Haunani Haasenritter drove in three runs on three hits, including a two-run double in the first.

Hilo (7-8) and Notre Dame de Namur (9-11) were scheduled to play a second game yesterday, but it was canceled because of rain.

Sarah Weisskopf picked up her third win of the season, pitching a six-hitter.
