Copter's stadium landing a mistake

Several yards of midfield turf was damaged yesterday when a military helicopter landed at War Memorial Stadium by mistake.
The helicopter touched down about 2:40 p.m. as a handful of joggers were making their way around the stadium track and walkway and members of the Baldwin High School track team were gathering for practice.
The stadium is adjacent to the high school, and Department of Parks and Recreation workers said the helicopter was supposed to land at a field on the other side of campus in connection with Baldwin's JROTC program.
Parks staff said the patch of grass that apparently was burned by aircraft exhaust will be fertilized and watered to see if it can recover. No events are scheduled for the field so the damage will not affect stadium use.

HIGH SCHOOL HOLDS SPORTS FUNDRAISER
Pearl City High School will be accepting redeemable plastic bottles and aluminum cans March 4 from 8 to 11 a.m. at the school's front office. Money raised from donations of HI 5¢ containers will be used to improve the school's athletic facilities. For information, call 453-6519.

FUNDRAISER TO AID LANDSLIDE VICTIMS
Proceeds from a fundraiser scheduled for Sunday will go to purchasing medical supplies for the Aloha Medical Mission's upcoming visit to Guinsaugon, Leyte, the Philippines, the site of last week's landslide that left an estimated 1,000 people dead.
The fundraiser will be from noon to 3 p.m. at the Loulen Restaurant at 1125 N. King Street. It is sponsored by the Congress of Visayan Organizations.
The mission is scheduled to leave March 13 and will be led by Dr. Vernon Ansdell, a tropical diseases specialist at Kaiser Hospital.
Sunday's event will broadcast live of KNDI AM radio's "Buhay Hawaii" program.

BUILDING TOPS IN ENERGY EFFICIENCY
The Kapolei State Building has been awarded the EPA's Energy Star award, which recognizes energy efficiency in a building's climate control, air quality and lighting.
EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson presented the award to Gov. Linda Lingle on Wed-nesday.
The Kapolei state office building is one of 14 in the state and 2,500 nationwide to receive Energy Star recognition. The program requires they score in the top 25 percent in the EPA's energy rating system.
MILILANI
LIBRARY TO CLOSE FOR RENOVATION
Mililani Public Library will be closed March 13 through April 2 for work on the first of two phases of an Americans with Disabilities Act renovation project. During this time, the library's book drop will remain open.
The first phase of renovation work will include the installation of energy-efficient light fixtures and ballasts, a new fire alarm and improvements to the handicapped parking stall, women's restroom and the atrium.
Customers can arrange to pick up reserved books and other materials at a library of their choice by calling Mililani Public Library at 627-7470 by March 6. Otherwise, customers will have to pick up reserved materials at the Pearl City Public Library.
The Mililani library will reopen April 3.
The date for the second phase of the Mililani Library's ADA renovation project has not been determined.
