The Honolulu Police Department said it will conduct impaired-driver checkpoints beginning today in an effort to deter alcohol- or drug-impaired driving on Super Bowl weekend.

Checkpoints will be set up at unannounced places and times through Monday.

As of last Friday, six people have died on O'ahu in traffic accidents. None of the six fatal collisions has been linked to impaired driving.

Speeding was determined to be a factor in one of the fatal accidents.

Honolulu police made 3,320 arrests of impaired drivers in the 12-month period that ended Sept. 30.

For the next 12-month period, which runs through Sept. 30, 2006, police will conduct at least one sobriety checkpoint each week. The "52/12" program is a joint effort of the state Department of Transportation and county police departments.
