WHERE'S FLUFFY?

What to do if you've lost a pet:

  • Search your home and neighborhood thoroughly.

  • File a lost report; visit the humane society in person and bring a photo of your pet.

  • Advertise your lost pet in the newspaper and call your radio station.

  • Check the "found" ads in the newspaper every day.

  • Make fliers with your pet's photo and give them to local mail carriers, veterinary clinics and stores.

  • Visit the society every other day to look for your pet in person, and check the new Web pages daily.

  • When you find your pet, call the society immediately at 946-2187, ext. 2, so the staff can continue to focus on pets that are still lost.

    How to use site

  • Go to www.hawaiianhumane .org and select "Lost and Found" from the green bar on top.

  • From the three selections on the right sidebar, choose the third: "Search our Found Pets database!"

  • The next page includes "Species" and a drop-down menu. If you don't see this in the middle of your screen, reduce the size of your display so you see all the information.

  • Select your animal choices from each drop-down menu until you see "search" and touch that button.

  • The broader your choices, the longer the information may take to load.

  • If you see your pet, make a note of the intake number and call the shelter immediately at 946-2187, ext. 2. Visit the shelter as soon as possible to reclaim your pet.

When Fluffy goes missing, who do you call? The Hawaiian Humane Society is O'ahu's official lost-and-found pet center. Last year, the society reunited more than 4,000 animals with their families. Now the society's Web site, www.hawaiianhumane.org, will further help missing pets find their people.

"We expect the number of pet reunions to increase this year, thanks to the brand new service on our Web site," said Pamela Burns, president and CEO of the Hawaiian Humane Society.

A $10,000 Community Appreciation grant from Hawaiian Telcom covered the cost of expanding the society's Web site and adding new features to the lost-and-found section.

"We have already launched the new Web pages that offer photos and descriptions of every stray animal brought to the society. Of course, we still want people to call and most important, visit us to look for their missing animals," Burns added.

The Internet posting of found pet photos is particularly important because every minute counts when pets are missing. Facing dangers from traffic and predators, lost animals are as anxious as their families to return back home. Pets without ID are held at the society for a minimum of 48 hours before being eligible for adoption. Stray pets with license, tag, microchip or other form of ID are held for a minimum of nine days before becoming eligible for adoption.

Every day, found animals are photographed and their descriptions posted on the Web, usually within hours of their arrival. When an animal is returned home, the closing of that record instantly removes it from the Web page, so the information is always current.
