New curator for Asian art at academy

Shawn Eichman has been named curator of Asian Art at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Eichman is a specialist on Chinese and Japanese art. He is also known for his expertise on the arts of Daoism (Taoism) and Buddhism. He is now curator of East Asian Art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond.

Eichman received his master's and doctorate degrees at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa.

From 1999 to 2001, he worked at The Art Institute of Chicago as exhibition coordinator in the Asian Art Department, research-ing the ground-breaking exhibition "Taoism and the Arts of China."

The catalog for that exhibition, co-authored by Eichman, won the College Art Association's Alfred H. Barr Jr. Award for best exhibition catalog in 2000. In 2000-01, he also was an instructor at the School of The Art Institute of Chicago.
