KANE'OHE — Campbell's football team proved last night it is worthy of its promotion to the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Red Conference by stuffing Castle, 17-6, to spoil the Knights' first home game since 2003.

Campbell, which won the Division II state championship two years ago, will compete in the OIA's Red (Division I) Western Division this season. Last night's nonleague game was the opener for both teams, but the Sabers quickly showed they have the muscle to compete in the top tier.

"We made a statement, we showed that Campbell belongs in the Red," said Sabers junior Bronson Ellis-Riveria, who led a punishing running attack with 86 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries.

Castle was a good first test, having qualified for the Red playoffs five of the past six years. But the undersized Knights had problems slowing down Campbell's signature "Delaware Wing-T" ground game and were plagued by numerous dropped passes on offense.

The Sabers took a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter after Ellis-Riveria's 3-yard touchdown run, and went up 10-0 with 5:03 remaining in the half on Kia Kapana's 35-yard field goal.

Castle finally scored 42 seconds before halftime on Bryson Ukauka's 35-yard TD pass to Corey Paredes, but the extra point attempt failed.

Both teams struggled on offense early in the second half, but Campbell's Martin Kodama recovered a fumble on a Knights' screen pass and returned it 37 yards to the Castle 4. Two plays later, Ellis-Riveria ran it in from the 2 and Kapana's extra point made it 17-6 with 2:58 left in the third quarter.

"We lost the momentum toward the end of the half, but we got it back in the second half and I said, 'Let's go, let's do it,' " Ellis-Riveria said.

The Knights threatened early in the fourth quarter, gaining second-and-1 on the Sabers' 14. But an incompletion, a swing pass for no gain and another incompletion killed the drive.

Campbell then milked most of the remaining clock with a 15-play drive.

"I thought that was the turning point, right there, when we couldn't convert on fourth-and-one and then they came back with that long drive," Castle coach Nelson Maeda said. "The things we could control, we didn't take care of and it was mostly a lack of concentration and focus. It's really disappointing."

Sabers coach Tumoana Kenessey said the Knights' big-play offense was always a concern.

"We are very fortunate to come out with a victory here," Kenessey said. "Castle is a tough team and they have a lot of speed. If they don't drop some of those passes, it could have easily gone the other way."

Castle was without a home stadium the past two seasons because its old wooden bleachers were deemed unsafe in late 2003. A crowd of about 1,500 watched last night's game from brand new aluminum bleachers.
