Shanadee Canon scored a game-high 26 points, including 16- of-18 free-throw attempts, to help visiting Kalaheo hold off Farrington, 55-52, last night in O'ahu Interscholastic Association action.

The Mustangs stayed unbeaten at 5-0 in the OIA's Red Conference Eastern Division; the Governors fell to 1-4.

Farrington, coming off a 54-52 loss to Kahuku on Tuesday, showed again that it has come a long way since a 72-28 loss to Roosevelt in the regular-season opener.

Elaine Leaupepe drained a 3-pointer — the Govs' eighth of the game — with two seconds remaining to close to 53-52, but Canon was fouled after the ensuing inbounds pass and sank two free throws with 0.2 ticks left.

Farrington could not get another shot attempt before the buzzer.

"They're a way better team than 1-4," Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said. "I've said it all season — every game in this division is going to be tough."

After the Mustangs jumped out to a 4-0 lead, the Governors went on a 14-2 run and held the lead until late in the second period. Canon's three-point play put Kalaheo up 26-25 at the half.

After an even third quarter, the Mustangs built a 49-43 lead after Canon made two free throws with 2:18 remaining in the game. But C'ani Kealoha swished a 3-pointer with two minutes left to make it 49-46, then sank another one to cut it to 51-49 with 15 seconds remaining.

Canon, a junior point guard, then made two free throws with 12.9 seconds left to push the lead up to 53-49. She made 13 free throws in a row since the end of the third period.

"She's a gifted player, and she attacks the basket so that's how she gets to the line," Farrington coach Jenic Tumaneng said. "Her team knows how to look for her, too, so that makes it even tougher on us."

POSTPONEMENTS

ILH, OIA SPORTING EVENTS WASHED OUT

All Interscholastic League of Honolulu events — baseball, judo, tennis, track and field and girls basketball — were postponed yesterday because of inclement weather.

The O'ahu Interscholastic Association postponed all baseball games yesterday, along with a Western Division golf tournament that was moved to April 13.

ILH baseball and golf events are postponed for today as well, and the OIA expects select baseball games to be postponed today.
