TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE
"Alias" season-opener, 7 p.m., ABC. This was already going to be a complex year with Sydney (Jennifer Garner) wondering if Vaughn has been a double agent. Garner's real-life pregnancy complicates that. In the show, it's Vaughn's baby. As the year goes on, Sydney will train a young assistant — played by Rachel Nichols, who was so good in "The Inside" — to do some of the butt-kicking. Balthazar Getty and Elodie Bouchez will join the cast.
"Everwood" season-opener, 8 p.m., WB. Andy (Treat Williams) is distressed. He loves Nina, who loves the younger doctor, Jake. He also misses his son, who left in anger. All of that is played out tonight alongside a wedding. It's beautifully written and acted with a great emotional pay-off.
OF NOTE
"Smallville" season-opener, 7 p.m., WB. The story keeps moving closer to the classic Superman tale. Added this season is the Fortress of Solitude, which star Tom Welling calls "brilliant" and "spectacular."
"Joey," 7 p.m., NBC. When Joey finds a child actor difficult to work with, he takes extreme measures. Meanwhile, Gina (who is an expert on matters of the heart) gives advice to Alex (who is not).
"Will & Grace" season-opener, 7:30 p.m., NBC. Continuing from last season, Grace considers an affair with a married man (Eric Stoltz) while Will seeks advice from Malcolm (Alec Baldwin).
"Night Stalker" debut, 8 p.m., ABC. The original series was an anthology with a reporter chasing monsters week-to-week. This remake gives him a broader, personal story to pursue. The opener isn't terribly involving, however.
"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," 8 p.m., CBS. A young movie star's body is found in a hotel.
"Sixties: The Years That Shaped a Generation," 9 p.m., PBS. Wrapping up its '60s Week emphasis, PBS views a bombastic decade. There are comments by people ranging from protestors (Jesse Jackson, Tom Hayden, Bobby Seale) to officials (Henry Kissinger, Edwin Meese, and Robert McNamara).
"Without a Trace" season-opener, 9 p.m., CBS. Last season ended with a shooting that left Martin (Eric Close) near death. Now comes the aftermath. And repercussions.
"ER," 9 p.m., NBC. A pregnant accident victim must make a quick decision — complicated, because she's a surrogate.
