Monday's gas up 25 cents

Advertiser Staff

The maximum allowable wholesale price for gasoline Monday will rise 25 cents, the state Public Utilities Commission said yesterday.

The pretax cap on regular gasoline on O'ahu will rise from about $2.32 to $2.57 a gallon, or about $3.20 a gallon after adding 63 cents in taxes.

The state sets a limit on what wholesalers can charge for gasoline but not retailers, so prices at the pump can vary.

Dealers have declined to say how much they add to their wholesale price, but their markup appears to range from 15 cents to 30 cents a gallon. If that holds true, prices at the pump in Honolulu next week could rise to between $3.35 and $3.50 a gallon.
