Treasured books from childhood serve as education and inspiration as we began to establish a value system and forge a relationship with the world around us. The Hawaiian Humane Society offers a "must read" list for kids, a collection of early childhood favorites that encourages humane values and aims to teach children kindness and compassion for all animals.
More than 11,000 children benefit from the organization's work in compassion and character education every year. Parents and children are encouraged to visit their neighborhood library or bookstore for any of these stories that celebrate the human-animal bond (note: some publication dates were unavailable):

Tag No. 74594. As bright as her name suggests, Star is a friendly black-and-white pit mix with an adorable face. Just 3 1/2 years old, she has a record of enjoying the company of kids and adults. Already housetrained, Star is ready for a new home today.

Tag No. 73370. This female tiger-striped cat is called Tawny. She was found in late August and remains unclaimed at the humane society. If you have lost this unspayed female cat wearing a red collar, please visit the shelter to claim her.
