  • Sister AGNELLE CHING has been named chief executive officer for St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawai'i. She succeeds Sister BEATRICE TOM, who was CEO for 15 years and has been named chief administrator of Our Lady of Kea'au, a spiritual retreat and homeless outreach center in Makaha.

    The appointments come at a time when St. Francis is finalizing the sale of its two medical centers, in Liliha and 'Ewa, and its chronic renal dialysis service. The sale is expected to be completed early next year.

    Sister Tom will continue as acting chief executive officer during a transition period and after that she will continue as system president.

    Sale of the system's renal dialysis service and hospitals is pending to a physicians group led by St. Francis cardiologist Dr. Danelo Canete and Wichita, Kan.-based Cardiovascular Hospitals of America.

    After divestiture of the hospitals, the healthcare system will consist of the Makaha retreat; St. Francis Community Health Services (home health and hospice care); St. Francis Healthcare Foundation (fundraising and community relations); St. Francis Residential Care Community (senior rental programs and low-/moderate-income townhome sales); and St. Francis Healthcare Enterprises Inc. (the for-profit ventures and partnerships subsidiary).

    Sister Ching was vice president of the system from 1991 to 1999, before assuming the post of Franciscan Sisters regional minister in Syracuse, N.Y.

  • DR. ALBERT YAZAWA has been named medical director for the O'ahu region of Hawaii Health Systems Corp., established in 1996 to oversee state hospitals, including Maluhia and Leahi hospitals. The agency operates 12 public hospitals and health facilities on five islands. Yazawa was previously medical director for Kula Hospital and the Maui Memorial Medical Center extended care unit.

  • KALOWENA KOMEIJI has been named publisher of the Downtown Planet, the 27-year-old weekly newspaper serving downtown Honolulu, the greater Honolulu area and Waikiki. She was most recently vice president, community relations, with Hawai'i Public Television Foundation (PBS Hawai'i), and is a former member of the Hawai'i Tourism Authority.

  • Maui native KENDRIC KIMIZUKA has accepted a post as first assistant golf professional at Ka'anapali Golf Courses on the Valley Isle. Kimizuka, with Ka'anapali since the end of 2004, has worked in guest services, supervision of the driving range facility, summer junior golf program, group golf clinics and private lessons. He assumes the additional duties of scheduling and departmental payroll. Kimizuka is part of the Professional Golf Association (golf tournament) apprentice program. Before choosing the professional golf career route, he worked for 12 years in the financial industry; his employers have included Bank of Hawai'i, American Express, Prudential Securities and First Hawaiian Bank.

  • DARCIE SCHARFENSTEIN, former reporter and 10-year veteran of public relations and marketing, has been named account supervisor of the corporate/public affairs division of McNeil Wilson Communications Inc. She will be working with client accounts in the areas of public issues and corporate image management. She specializes in media relations, as well as strategic planning for major utilities, nonprofit organizations, manufacturers and wireless technology providers. She is a former reporter and anchor for Clear Channel Hawaii.

  • DANIEL TERADA has joined family real-estate company Terada Real Estate LLC as a Realtor-associate, representing buyers and sellers of commercial and residential real estate. Terada, a notary public, was previously an escrow associate with Title Guaranty Escrow.

    These appointments have been announced at Hawaiian Telcom:

  • BRIAN ALLEN, vice president, general business direct sales, will lead the company's new general business sales team, providing face-to-face service and support to Hawai'i's small-business market. He was previously director of sales for Cincinnati Bell Telephone.

  • LESTER CHU, new vice president, strategy and business development, began his telecommunications career in 1989 with GTE Hawaiian Tel as manager of network sales engineering. He will lead development of Hawaiian Telcom's long-term strategy and new business growth opportunities. Most recently, Chu was vice president of marketing and strategic planning with Verizon Information Services in Dallas, leading marketing and planning for Verizon's $3.6 billion print and online directory business.

  • GIL MENDELSON, vice president, financial planning and analysis, has worked for 25 years in Hawai'i in such industries as telecommunications, banking and petroleum. He was most recently vice president and general manager of AT&T Wireless-Hawai'i. He will oversee the budgeting, reporting and strategic planning efforts for Hawaiian Telcom.

  • FRANCIS MUKAI joins the firm's legal team as vice president and associate general counsel. Most recently he was counsel with the Honolulu law firm Ishikawa Morikawa Lau & Fong LLP.
