Weng's 43 kills help BYUH beat UH-Hilo

Yu Chuan Weng amassed a school-record 43 kills and set a Seasiders career kills record with 1,626 as 21st-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, 30-21, 26-30, 30-24, 27-30, 15-13, last night in a Pacific West Conference volleyball match in La'ie.
Weng, who was named the PacWest Player of the Week earlier in the day, added 16 digs as BYUH improved to 16-3 overall and 4-3 in the conference.
Noelle Filimoeatu added 12 kills and 26 digs for the Seasiders.
Taina Savage had 18 kills and 14 digs for Hilo (12-8, 3-4).
GOLF
IYOKI, KIAAINA TOP FIELD
Mike Iyoki and Ron Kiaaina teamed for an 8-under 63 at Oahu Country Club yesterday to earn medallist honors for the qualifying round of the Aloha Section PGA's Golf Concepts/E-Z-Go 4-Ball Match Play Championship.
Iyoki, of U.S. Army Golf, and Kiaaina, of the Makaha Resort, will meet Lee Prochaska and Gordon Tsujimura, who shot 79, in today's first round.
Three-time defending champions Andrew Feldmann, head pro at OCC, and Larry Stubblefield, an OCC member, earned a first-round bye.
WARRIORS FINISH 16TH
The University of Hawai'i men's golf team finished 16th in the 18-team Taylor Made Barona Collegiate Cup yesterday in Lakeside, Calif.
The Warriors shot a final-round 282 to finish at 9-under 855. Brigham Young won with a 42-under 822 total, followed by Fresno State (834) and Louisville (837).
UH's Pierre-Henri Soero shot a final-round 4-under 68 to finish tied for 27th at 5-under 211. Other UH golfers were: Travis Toyama (72—213, tied for 37th), Jarret Hamamoto (72—216, tied for 48th), Cody Wolfenbarger (70—219, tied for 71st) and Kyle Walters (72—225, tied for 85th).
Denver's James Love won medallist honors with 71—201.
VULCANS PLACE EIGHTH
The University of Hawai'i-Hilo women's golf team placed eighth in the 23-team Cal State Monterey Bay Invitational in Seaside, Calif.
The Vulcans finished with a 676 total. Western Washington won with 634.
Hilo's Jayna Shimomura shot a final-round 8-over 81 to finish tied for eighth at 160. Other UHH golfers were: Kiilani Matsuyoshi (86—168, tied for 23rd), Kristen Higa (84—168, tied for 23rd), Breena Kadekaru (90—180, tied for 61st).
MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
LAM, YONAMINE WIN
Kane'ohe's Tommy Lam and Mililani's Kynan Yonamine won professional mixed martial arts matches at the Submission Arts Wrestling Federation's Global Championship held in Shinjuku, Japan Oct. 9.
Lam, 32, beat reigning and defending five-time SAW champion Tomoyuki Tachi, forcing a tapout at 4:33 of the first round of the lightweight title fight.
Yonamine, 31, defeated Hajime Ubukata via submission at 2:30 of the first round to claim the light heavyweight title.
Both are instructors at Kempo Unlimited Hawai'i.
LACROSSE
CLINIC TOMORROW
Professional player Casey Powell will conduct a clinic for Hawaiian Islands Youth Lacrosse players from 4 to 6 p.m. tomorrow at Central O'ahu Regional Park.
Powell was NCAA player of the year at Syracuse in 1997 and 1998. He is a four-time All-American, 1999 World Cup MVP, and the leading scorer in Major League Lacrosse history. He is co-owner of the Powell Brothers Lacrosse Camps.
