HIGH SURF WARNING ISSUED
North Pacific storms are sending northwest swells this way, and the National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high-surf advisory for the state's northern and western shores through 3 p.m. tomorrow.
Continued high surf is expected through midweek and further advisories may be issued.
The weather service expected surf on north-facing shores to reach 8 to 12 feet last night, and up to 20 feet today.
On the west-facing shores, the surf was expected to build to 6 to 10 feet overnight, and could grow to 15 feet today.
The National Weather Service measures the wave face from trough to crest.
The surf could go even higher tonight and tomorrow, forecasters said.
Beachgoers are advised to avoid dangerous waves and rip currents by staying well away from the shore break on affected shores.
ARTS FELLOWSHIP APPLICATIONS DUE
Visual and performing artists interested in an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Hawai'i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts must have their applications in the mail by tomorrow.
Nominations for the Hawai'i Award for Literature and the Governor's Award for Distinguished Achievement in Culture, Arts and Humanities must also be postmarked by tomorrow.

LEEWARD
WATER RESTORED AFTER PIPE FIXED
A broken 24-inch water main that supplies the entire Leeward Coast was repaired early yesterday morning, said the Honolulu Board of Water Supply.
Residents from Honokai Hale to Makaha had been asked to restrict water usage to essential purposes after the main ruptured on Farrington Highway near the Ko Olina resort Friday morning.
Repair crews worked through the day and evening. Water service was restored at about 12:30 a.m. yesterday and road repairs were completed by 2 p.m., said Devon Nekoba, an information specialist with the board.
The board had said the aging water main had been the focus of a main replacement project.
KALIHI
WOMAN, 25, HURT IN LIKELIKE CRASH
A 25-year-old woman was in critical condition last night after an accident on the Likelike Highway.
Paramedics took her to The Queen's Medical Center, said Colin Wong, an Emergency Medical Services district chief.
Police continued to investigate the cause of the wreck, which was near Valley View Drive, late into the night. Traffic was routed to H-3.

VISITOR MISSING SINCE SEPT. 30
HILO — Big Island police are seeking a 32-year-old Japanese national who has not contacted family or friends since Sept. 30.
Police said Chie Shimamura was visiting Kona and traveling in Hawai'i on a visa that has since expired. She is 5 feet 2 inches, about 100 pounds, and speaks broken English.
