Business gifts they won't forget
By Rhonda Abrams
Looking for a gift for the entrepreneur on your holiday list? Putting together your own holiday wish list? To help, I've developed a list of business gifts that are useful, practical, or just plain cool. To be honest, some of these are what I'm wishing for. You were thinking of sending me a gift, weren't you?
Wireless Internet: It's time to cut (figuratively) the Internet cord. In my office, we still use wired connections at our desks, but having wireless throughout the office enables us to pick up a laptop and work in the conference room or elsewhere. At home, wireless enables me to answer e-mail in the living room, kitchen, even the bedroom. To go wireless, you'll need a wireless router and a wireless card if your computer is not already wireless-enabled. And, of course, someone to set it up.
Cordless keyboard and mouse: Once you start getting rid of wires, you won't want to stop. So clean up your desk and get a cordless keyboard and mouse. You can purchase both together for under $100.
Wireless headset: For the always-on-the-phone entrepreneur with neck and back problems, a headset is a must. A wireless headset is even better! These aren't cheap — they start at around $200 — but, hey, your health is worth it.
Footrest: A cheaper way to save your back is by using a footrest. I have two: under my desks at my home and office. You could needlework a personalized footstool, but if you're not Martha Stewart, buy one online or at an office supply store. You'll find a couple under $40 at The Healthy Back Store.
Shredder: A good quality paper shredder is an absolute necessity, with the prevalence of identity theft and new federal regulations requiring businesses to shred documents that contain personal information. Shredders are available in a wide range of prices, but you'll want one that can shred card stock and multiple pages. A good choice for home or small office costs between $25 and $100.
Fire safe: This is one of the dullest — but most useful — of gifts. Having a good quality fireproof safe for storing important documents and backup copies of computer files is a must, but since these are expensive, we often overlook buying these for ourselves. Expect to pay at least $250. Because these are heavy, buy it locally. Check warehouse clubs for the best prices.
Consultation: What most entrepreneurs need — especially new entrepreneurs — is professional help. So give them a gift certificate for an hour or two with a management consultant, attorney, accountant, marketing consultant or QuickBooks trainer.
Business cards: Isn't it time for a business card makeover? It's best to work with a local graphic artist and/or printer to see exactly what you're getting (quality of paper, colors, etc.) and support your local small businesses at the same time.
