Attention, readers: The beloved comic "Calvin and Hobbes" is returning to The Honolulu Advertiser!

The strips that will run beginning next Sunday are repeat editions of comics in the series, which ran from 1985 to 1995. Universal Press Syndicate has released this limited-edition run of "Calvin and Hobbes" in conjunction with the October publication of "The Complete Calvin and Hobbes" books.

Bill Watterson's comic, a reader favorite, will run from Sept. 4 through Dec. 31.

The comic strip features the adventures of the troublemaking boy Calvin and good-natured tiger Hobbes. At calvinand hobbes.com, Watterson describes Calvin as "an outlet for my immaturity, as a way to keep myself curious about the natural world."

The comic strip is a favorite with readers worldwide. Universal Press Syndicate reports that more than 23 million "Calvin and Hobbes" books are in print.

Adding "Calvin and Hobbes" will lead to change on our comics pages. As "Cathy" has entered a new phase, with the marriage of its lead character, we feel it is time to consider new stories for our pages. A permanent replacement for "Cathy" will be announced before the "Calvin and Hobbes" run ends.

If you have a comment about the addition of "Calvin and Hobbes" and the end of "Cathy," or a suggestion about a new comic, we have set up special lines for you. To make a comics comment, please call 535-2488 or write to newcomics@honoluluadvertiser.com.

We know readers who are Calvin & Hobbes fans will be counting the days until Sept. 4 and the start of the encore strips. To whet your appetite, we're kicking off with a trivia contest below.
