Former University of Hawai'i quarterback Tim Chang apparently has earned a tryout with the Detroit Lions.

Mary Ann Chang told The Advertiser her son "was on his way to Detroit" last night. She said she did not have full details of his arrangement with Detroit.

But UH coach June Jones, who was not contacted by the Lions, said he believes the usual protocol is to invite a player to try out and interview before deciding whether to offer a contract.

Chang is the NCAA's career leader in passing yards.

He was not selected in the National Football League's seven-round draft in April.

He signed a free-agent contract with the Arizona Cardinals, and participated in two mini-camps and the start of training camp. He was cut before the Cardinals' first exhibition game.
